April 2023 Knit Bits and Spinning Yarns

Knit Bits & Spinning Yarns

April 2023

Spring is here? Really? I know we’re only a few weeks in, but it’s not off with a bang so far, IMO. I’m still wearing

long sleeves and sweaters plus thinking about knitting scarves and shawls! (The forecast this week does look promising however.)

Currently, The Sophie Shawl/Scarf by PetiteKnit is all the rage. Kay Gardiner of MDK (moderdailyknitting.com

made it very popular when she mentioned it in their blog. The scarf takes only one skein and has an I-cord edge

for a great finish. Our sample features a blend of Malabrigo Sock in Camel and Malabrigo Mohair in Diana.

Kinda like “Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur…” Mohair (we have several kinds, weights and colors)

has been very popular at K & S for a while, it’s the hot sauce of yarns, it’s good in everything!

West Michigan Yarn Quest 2023 begins May 12 and runs through the 20th.

Incidentally, Mother's Day is May 14, and a yarn crawl would make a great gift for Mom, wink, wink.

Passports for the annual event are now available for $10 each. You can obtain yours at any of the

participating shops: Country Needleworks in Jenison, GarenHuis Yarn Studio in Holland, Henny’s Yarn Shop in Caledonia,

Knit & Spin in Montague, Chicks with Sticks Yarn Shop in Portage, J.T. Stitchery Yarn Fiber & Crafts in Rockford,

New Ewe Yarn & Quilt Shoppe in Newaygo and Threadbender in Grandville. If you’re new to Yarn Quest, each of the

participating stores will have a stamp and if you collect all the stamps, you can enter the drawing. Grand prize is a

gift basket valued at over $800 as well as eight runner up prizes each valued at $150.  There are discounts and a free

knit or crochet pattern at each shop for all passport holders. Also, the first and second sections

of the West Michigan Yarn Quest Mystery Knit/Crochet-along have been released. You can find both the knit and crochet

version through searching for the Wrappuccino pattern by Becca Anderson on Ravelry.

The third section will be released on April 15th so there's plenty of time to make your shawl before the quest begins.

Check out the West Michigan Yarn Quest Facebook page for more information, but. we will definitely keep you

updated here about the goings on.

Do you crochet? K & S started a new group called Crochet Club! Meet up is the first and fourth Tuesday

of each month from 5pm-7pm. A CAL (aka crochet along) pattern chosen for the project is Horizon Cardigan,

and is a free pattern by Hobbii. It is very inclusive and very customizable. Find yours at Hobbii.com

You don’t have to participate in the CAL to be part of the group, just bring whatever you’re currently working

on and join Ann and the others.

So, I’m hoping for great weather Saturday April 29, Local Yarn Store Day (LYS Day)! We hope to see you!
We will feature some patterns and projects, as well as host an open stitch day. As a way to say thank you to
all our customers we will offer a special $5.00 make it, take it project, snacks and drinks.
Local Yarn Store Day is a way to celebrate and support your favorite yarn shop/s.
Another way you can support your lys is by using items with their name and/log on them.
We are excited to announce our new online shop, Knit Bits! In this shop you will find bags, t-shirts,
mugs and other items with our Knit & Spin name and logo on them.

Looking forward to some summer knitting? Maybe a tank would fit the bill. Leanne is working on a

version of Soho Top with a Cestari cotton and merino blend. Yarn from Cestari Sheep and Wool Company is new to K&S.

Who is Cestari you ask? In their words, "Cestari Sheep and Wool Company is a small family-owned and

operated American manufacturer of knitting and crocheting yarn.  We have a farm in Augusta County,

Virginia where we raise sheep for wool that we use in our yarn.  We also source wool from reputable ranchers

throughout the United States.  All of our sheep and wool products are always grown and processed in the

United States.  Our cotton products are grown and processed exclusively in Virginia." We like the idea that

they are family owned and utilize American wool and cotton for the majority of their yarns.
